  • Frederick Douglass was sent to live with Thomas Auld. Auld was a very cruel man that didn’t give Douglass enough food to eat.
  • Sometimes Frederick Douglass would let the horses run loose just so he could get more food from the neighbor.
  • Auld became very religious during the time Douglass was there . This was surprisingly bad because Auld used religion to justify his wrongdoings.
  • A few days after Douglass got the root, he stood up for himself again against Mr. Covey. This led to a large fight that led to Douglass never being whipped by him again.
  • Douglass went back, and while he was in the woods, he met with a slave named Sandy who gave Douglass a tip about a special root.
  • Douglass recalls that the worst time of his life was at Mr. Covey’s. He sees the ships passing by as a symbol of freedom.
  • One day, Douglass goes to Auld’s house to explain how Mr. Covey is too mean and needs to be punished. Auld dismisses this and encourages Douglass to go back.
  • Douglass was then sent to live with Mr. Covey to “break” him. Covey built this reputation because he was one of the most malevolent slave owners there were.
  • Covey was referred as the “snake” by the slaves because he tries to sneak up on the slaves to catch them resting.
  • Douglass and Covey got into a small fight when Douglass refused to be whipped, but this was not the worst one fight to happen. 
  • Douglass is sent to go live with Mr. Freeland which Douglass says is the best slave owner he has ever had.
  • Douglass started a school where he taught slaves how to read and write. This was a secret and the slaves would have been severely punished if they were caught.
  • Douglass lives somewhat happily with Freeland for a few years, but Douglass still desires to be free.
  • Douglass wants to escape now more than he ever did.
  • After being caught trying to develop an escape plan, Douglass is sent to Thomas Auld. Then, Douglass was sent to Hugh Auld again in Baltimore.
  • Douglass was working in the shipyard like he was when he was younger. His eye got really hurt in a racially motivated fight.
  • Douglass also learned that he can stand up for himself against slaveowners. This has led him to believing more in himself.
  • Douglass has a desire for freedom stronger than he every had before.
  • In these chapters, Douglass learned both the best sides of slavery and the worst sides of slavery. Slaveowners can make slaves miserable.
