  • The Squire's Tale is the 11th story in The Canterbury Tales.
  • Climax
  • On the 20th anniversary of King Cambyuskan reign as king, he holds a feast with his wife Elpheta, his two sons Algrsyf and Camblo, and his daughter Canacee. But during the feast a mysterious knight arrives and gives the king four gifts, a ring that can interpret the language of birds, a mirror that can see the vague future, a sword that can pierce any armor and heal all wounds, and a brass horse that teleport any where in the world within 24 hours.
  • Falling Action
  • The knight then distributes all four gifts to the King's family, the king receives the brass horse, Algrsyf and Camblo get the magic sword, Queen Elpheta gets the mirror, and Canacee receives the ring that can translate the language of birds. After receiving their gifts the knight leaves the palace and everyone goes to sleep dreaming about how they will use their gifts, accept for Canacee who wonders how the ring will benefit birds.
  • Resolution
  • The next morning Canacee is taking a walk in her garden when she finds a falcon that seems to be on the brink of death. She uses her gift of the ring and learns that the falcon had tried to commit suicide after her husband had left her for another bird. Canacee uses her ring to help nurse the falcon back to health.
  • After waking up the queen decides to use her new mirror to see a nearby future. The mirror then shows her an image of her husband and says a great truth will be dropped on her if she doesn't find her husband in the palace. Queen Elpheta assumes that her husband must be having an affair and seeks him out before he leaves for battle.

  • He must be cheating on me!
  • The queen does not find her husband, but her two sons, one who has died with the magic sword lying beside him, but she also dies when a chandler above her drops on her head after she figures out the truth of the seemingly cursed gifts. Canacee sees that her brother and mother have died when she arrives, the knight suddenly arrives and informs her that not only has she has used her gift for a good purpose, but her father has gone missing after using the brass horse. He explains that all of the gifts have a consequence, if used to someone uses the sword to heal they will give their own life to heal another, the mirror if not followed exactly will kill the user, and the horse only has a one time use.
