- Denmark Vesey started off as a incapable slave boy who was later refunded back to his slave trader and was enslaved to him there. Later on in his life in 1977 Vesey won a 1500$ lottery and bought his freedom for 600$, using the other remaining money to start his carrier as a carpenter.
- He helped established the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopalian (A.M.E.) Church in Charleston.
- Denmark became a leader of the A.M.E. church in Charleston. He even used his position as a respected free man and Methodist leader to organize other free and enslaved men.
- No free black person who left state of own will could ever return.Free blacks on ships from other states could not go ashore.Aiding in slave revolt could result in death.
- On May 30, 1822, George Wilson, "a favorite and confidential slave" informed his master of a planned insurrection that involved thousands of free and enslaved men.
- Following a trial, Vesey and 36 other people involved with the plot were hanged. Despite arrests and beatings, many blacks defied authorities by wearing mourning black as they witnessed the executions
