- Two friends, Bob and George, are sitting in a café, talking, when the topic of discussion happens to fall upon the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
- My parents are encouraging me to go to Confession, but it’s been a while since the last time I had one. I only remember having one when I was really small. Honestly, I don’t really remember how it works, what it means, or why I should even do it.
- Ok, but… What does the Sacrament actually involve?
- Confession, or the Sacrament of Reconciliation, started during Jesus’ time as a way to give sinners an opportunity to fix their relationship with God by asking for forgiveness for the times they made bad choices and went against God. It celebrates the pardoning of sins and God’s power and will to renew us and give us a second chance when we have made mistakes.
- That’s OK. So usually,to receive the Sacrament you have to confess your sins to a priest. The first thing that you should do is reflect on your life and actions to determine any times that you have sinned. Then you should find a suitable time and place for your confession. When it’s time for your confession, you should go to the chosen place and meet the priest. Make the sign of the cross, say the words, ‘Bless me, Father, for I have sinned,’ and then say how long it’s been since the last time you had a Confession. You must then list your sins and say, “I’m sorry for these and all my sins.” The priest will give you a penance, which might involve praying some specific prayers or doing a good deed. Then you must pray the Act of Contrition, after which you will get absolved from your sins by God through the priest. The priest will raise his right hand over your head and recite the Prayer of Absolution. If you receive the sacrament in a booth, then the raised hand and “laying on of hands” is symbolic, since you cannot see the priest behind the screen. The sacrament concludes with you making the sign of the cross and saying “Amen”.
- I see. Everything is making much more sense now. But I still don’t really get why it’s so important for me to do it.
- Hmmm… You’ve convinced me! I now understand why the Sacrament of Reconciliation is so important. When I get home, I’ll start planning the date and time for my next Confession.
- Reconciliation helps us restore our relationship with God, and liberates us from our sin. It’s a sacrament of Healing, in the sense that by removing our sin thus our guilt which is weighing us down, it cleanses and purifies one’s mind and spirit. Lots of people, including myself, have noted that they feel really light and refreshed after having a Confession. I believe that Reconciliation can have a helpful effect on one’s mental health as it allows one to be freed from their past mistakes, guilt, and regret which may be clouding their mind.
