- "As a police officer I was an obvious target and wa baited whenever it seemed safe to do so. When a nimble Burman tripped me up on the football field and the referee (another Burman) looked the other way, the crowd yelled the hideous laughter...the insults hooted after me when I was at a safe distance, got badly on my nerves" (Orwewll 705).
- Orwell is faced with dealing with the hatred from the Burman people who constantly criticize him and make a fool of him. In the Burman community he is an outcast and a target of hate since he is a British officer
- " I had already made up my mind that imperialism was an evil thing and the sooner I chucked up my job and got out of it the better....All I knew was that I was stuck between my hatred of the empire I served and my rage against the evil-spirited little beasts who tried to make my job impossible" (Orwerll 705-706).
- Orwell is conflicted because he is forced to work for an empire/society that he does not truly support. He is conflicted about how cruel the society acts towards the Burmans and how he can not do anything in his position to fight imperialism.
- "A white man mustn’t be frightened in front of “natives”...The sole thought in my mind was that if anything went wrong those two thousand Burmans would see me pursued, caught, trampled on, and reduced to a grinning corpse like that Indian up the hill. And if that happened it was quite probable that some of them would laugh... There was only one alternative. I shoved the cartridges into the magazine and lay down on the road to get a better aim" (Orwell 709).
- Orwell faces pressure from the Burman community to kill the elephant even though he doesn't want to. He realizes he needs to set an example for everyone and ensure that in society he is seen with respect and not seen as being foolish.
