- Who am I?
- Thomas wakes up to the swaying off the elevator. He cannot see anything because it was so dark. He could not remember anything except for his first name. After what felt like hours to Thomas of being in the elevator it came to a stop. Thomas felt around to see if there were any doors when suddenly the ceiling opened and Thomas was blinded by the light from the sun.
- Thomas, who was still confused about what was going on, was pulled up and introduced to many people. Thomas looks around to discover that there are four huge stone walls that surrounded the area with an opening in the center of each. Thomas meets Alby, the leader, and Newt. As Thomas is trying to learn about what's happening there is a scream from the wood building. Alby and newt run off towards the building and Thomas is left to find Chuck, which after a while he does. Chuck and Thomas talk by a tree and Thomas learns about beetle blades and how they sting. Thomas also learns that the elevator he rode in was called the box.
- Thomas learns he is now the green bean of the glade. CHuck was the green bean before him, he was the newest in the group. Chuck who appears to be younger than Thomas leads him to the building where he can rest and tells him that this is his way of life now and that he will get used to it. Inside the building, Thomas meets up with Gally and has a heated greeting. Gally informs Thomas that he was stung, and when he was getting treated he saw Thomas. Thomas had no memory of Gally and no memory of what being stung meant. This was the second time the word stung came up. Thomas decides to ignore Gally's demands and proceeds up the stairs to find Newt.
- As Thomas heads up the stairs he can hear the rest of the people and Gally murmur. Upstairs Thomas sees a hallway with many doors. What was behind the doors Thomas thought? Only one door had light coming from it. So Thomas nervously walks toward the door. He slowly turned the handle and opens the door. Thomas is shocked when he sees Alby, Newt, and some boy in the room.
- Inside the room, the kid was sitting in a bed, and Alby and Newt were looking over him.The boy was very bruised, in tremendous pain, and had green ropelike veins pushing under his skin. This must have the boy he heard screaming earlier, and the boy Chuck said got stung. Alby noticed Thomas and quickly jumps up to block the view and escorts Thomas out of the room. Alby yells at Thomas for being up there, so Thomas returns back downstairs embarrassed and asks Chuck to take him so where else. So they leave.
- Chuck decides that they should eat and instructs that Thomas returns to the tree they were talking about earlier. When Chuck meets with Thomas, he has ham sandwichs. The sandwiches were made by a boy named Frypan, the cook of the glade. Underneath the tree Thomas and Chuck eat and talk. Thomas learns from Chuck what the four opeings are and learns all about his way of life.
