- Deathis established as a character who kills all. He killed a thousand in the present plague and the tavern owner also warns them that they should all be on guard and be ready to meet him everywhere they go.
- The three men come across a very poor old man who humbly greets them. The old fellow, met with disrespect, responds by claiming that with age comes wisdom and not even the most powerful death can take his life. Soon after, the man reprimands the three men for disrespecting an elder. He claims he must now leave.
