- Hibbert went to talk with Stanhope. Hibbert told him that he wanted to go down the line and visit the hospital because of a neuralgia (a disease) that, supposedly, was making him feel very bad.Stanhope answered that he always had it, so he know what was he talking about.
- Let’s get by Stanhope
- I can’t ! Don’t you understand?
- I shall die of this pain if I don’t go.
- Look here Hibbert. I have got a lot of work to do and no time to waste. Once and for all, you are going to stay here and see it through with the rest of us.

- Hibbert turns away and walked towards his dug-out. But Stanhope didn’t allowed him to do it. Stanhope noticed what was wrong with him.
- Let me go
- If you went, I’d have you shoot for deserting. I give you half a minute to decide, if you are going to stay here and try and be a man, or if you a try to get out of that door, to desert.

- Hibbert goes excitedly into the dug-out. Stanhope walks slowly towards his steps, turns, and undoes the flap of his revolver holster. He takes out his revolver and start casually examining it.
- Good man Hibbert.
- Stanhope, I tried like a hell. I am different from the others, you don’t understand.
- Stay here old chap, and see it thorough

- Why didn’t you shoot?
- Hibbert walks slowly round behind Stanhope. Stanhope turns and thrusts him roughly back. With a lightning movement Hibbert raises his stick and strikes blindly at Stanhope, who catches the stick, tears it from Hibbert’s hands, smashes it across his knee, and throws it on the ground.
- What do you mean?
- You know what I mean.
- Stanhope looks up. He quietly drops his revolver and steps towards Hibbert. Gently Stanhope places his hands on Hibbert’s shoulder. Hibbert starts violently and give a little cry. He looks at Stanhope’s face and he was smiling.
- Go on, then, shoot! I swear I will never go into trenches again. Shoot!
- Hibbert takes the mug and drinks. Stanhope sits down beside Hibbert and puts an arm round his shoulder and told him “I know all what you feel Hinber, I known all along”.
- No, thanks
- Go on, drink it.
