- Sally Ride, an American astronaut, was known for being the first American woman in space. She studied at Swarthmore College, the University of California, Los Angeles, and Stanford University, graduating with a master's degree and PhD in physics.
- One day, when Sally was reading a newspaper, she came upon an ad for NASA, saying that they needed astronauts. Sally immediately responded to the ad, as well as over 8,000 others, and ended up being one out of 25 others to make it into the program.
- After training for almost a year, Sally became a mission specialist, meaning she was kept to the ground for the moment and served as the ground-based capsule communicator, or CapCom, and partially developed the Canadarm robot arm for Space Shuttles. On June 18, 1983, she became a crew member on the Space Shuttle Challenger, and the first American woman in space. Social media at the time had some health concerns about the mission, but it never mattered in the end. However, Ride's career came to an end on January 28, 1986, when the infamous Space Shuttle Challenger disaster occured, killing seven fellow crewmates in the explosion, and Sally was lucky that she wasn't on that flight. In 2012, she died from pancreatic cancer, but even today, Sally Ride's story and legacy lives on as it always did and always will be.
