- While walking home from the movies Ponyboy is jumped by a group of Socs. Luckily he is saved by some of the Greasers that happened to be nearby.
- Ponyboy, the protagonist narrates the start of the book while exiting the theater. Ponyboy tells the reader about the poor Greasers and the Rich Socs and how they often fight each other.
- After running from the scene they meet with Dally who gives them fifty dollars and directions to an abandoned church outside of town.After a week Dally visits and takes them to a dairyqueen. While eating he tells them that the police are off their trail.
- After returning to the church from Dairy queen Ponyboy and Johnny see a fire has broken out in the church they were staying in and that kids are inside the church. Pony and Johnny rush in and save the kids from the fire. However a beam falls on Johnny's back, breaking his back.
- When Pony and Johnny ( another greaser) are in a park they are ambushed by a few socs that nearly drown ponyboy in the fountain. Johnny freaks out and stabs the Soc holding him under, killing the Soc.
- At the court hearing for the original self defence murder Pony is the only one unable to tell the Judge what happened that night. Pony is unable to return to everyday life and getting through each day is hard for him. Pony finds a note from Dally telling him that he can continue on with life and the meaning of the words "Nothing gold can stay". Pony ends the book dedicating it to "all the Dallys in the world".

- Johnny is rushed to the hospital by ambulance and dies due to his injuries. distraught Dally robs a store and asks to be picked up. The police catch up with Dally just as Pony and Johnny arrive. They see Dally pull a dark object from his pocket just before he is gunned down by the police.
