- "I don't know yet. Alfredo is not very specific, but I understand Esperanza wants it to be next month."

- The story of the Dead Stars by Paz Marquez Benitez begins at Don Julian’s house (Alfredo’s father). Carmen was asking Don Julian, her father, about Alfredo and Esperanza.
- The trouble with you, Esperanza, is that you are---
- Why do you get angry? I do not understand you at all! I think I know why you have been indifferent to me lately. I am not blind, or deaf; I see and hear what perhaps some are trying to keep from me.
- Eight weeks earlier, Alfredo had gone neighboring with Don Julian to judge Del Valle’s house. That’s where he met the girl named Julia Salas. She is the sister-in-law of Judge Del Valle. Coming to the judge’s house and meeting Julia became often. Julia made him feel lively and young. He realized that he was in love with Julia.
- After the procession, Alfredo caught up with Julia. This is the moment when Julia found out about Alfredo’s wedding. She congratulated him. He tried to confess his feelings to Julia the night before her departure. He mentioned how he’s torn between what he wants to do and what he has to do. Julia respected the fact that Alfredo was already engaged and so she said goodbye.
- I am sure. Only love will calm a doubting heart. And the love of Esperanza calmed my doubting heart.
- Alfredo and Esperanza had an argument about their different perspectives on what seems to be an immoral act that Calixta did. This led to Esperanza confronting Alfredo.
- Despite the confrontation, the wedding between Alfredo and Esperanza still happened. Alfredo chose not to break his word. After 8 years, for work reasons, he had to go to Julia’s hometown.
- There are a lot of what ifs and why’s lingering in his mind. Arriving at Julia’s hometown, he can’t help but look for her. He found Julia. Alfredo and Julia had their closure. Alfredo finally had an answer to his what if’s and why’s.
