Prologue Thebes is suffering from a plague. The townspeople have come to ask for help.
What defilement? How shall we rid ourselves of it?(Line 103)
By exile or death, blood for blood. It was murder that brought the plague-wind on the city. (Line 104-105)
The god commands us to expel from the land of Thebes / an old defilement we are sheltering. (Line 99-100)
I say that you are the murderer whom you seek (Line 143)
He has brought this decrepit fortune-teller, this Collector of dirty pennies, this prophet fraud-- Why, he is no more clairvoyant than I am (Line 170-173)
As for the criminal, I pray to God-- Whether it be a lurking thief, or one of a number-- I pray that that man's life be consumed in evil... (Line 29-31)
Scene 1Kreon called upon the fortune teller Teiresias to find the person that killed the pervious King.
I think that myself my be accurst By my own ignorant edict. (217 218).
Think of it: I have touched you with these hands, These hands that killed your husband. What defilement(Lines 296 297)
You may be sure that he said there were several; And can he call back that story now? He can not. (Lines 321 322).
Scene 2Oedipus is accusing Kreon of plotting to take his thrown. But later reveals in a different conversation that he killed the past King.
He was tall, his hair just touched With white; his form was not unlike your own (215 216)
Scene 3Oedipus is being told that King Polybos has died. He thinks that the oracle is false. Then learns that he wasn't his dad.
Polybos was not your father(100)
If you must be told, then ...They said it was Laios' child; (56 57)
Scene 4Oedipus calls for the shepherd who gave the baby to the messenger. He finds out the truth that Laios is his dad. And Iokaste is his mom. With this information the oracles have come true.
Drive me out of this country as quickly as may be To a place where no human voice can ever greet me. (207 208)
ExodosIokaste killed herself and when Oedipus found out he stabbed himself in the eyes. Oedipus talks about how the oracle came true and how he deserved the punishment. He later asks Kreon to exile him out of Thebes forever.
I should have done that before now-- only, God's rule had not been wholly revealed to me ( 209 210).
