  • After the Mexican-American War, the newly gained Mexican Cession needed to be organized and the issue of slavery in the new territory needed to be solved. Henry Clay, a Whig party member, proposed a series of resolutions in January of 1850, but the bill met resistance during voting. Stephen Douglas, a Democrat, also contributed to the Compromise of 1850 by proposing the idea that the rest of the Mexican Cession should decide whether or not to allow slavery by popular sovereignty.He solved the problem that did whole bill could not be passed by breaking the compromise down into 5 separate parts and get them passed individually.

  • In 1852, Uncle Tom's Cabin, a book written by Harriet Beecher Stowe, was published. While praised in the North, the book was banned in the South as Southerners viewed the book as an untrue and biased depiction of slavery in the South.
  • Let's raid Harper's Ferry and start a slave revolt!

  • After the Kansas Nebraska Act was passed in 1854, pro-slavery and antislavery settlers rushed to Kansas in order to try to create majorities for their respective sides. This resulted in violence confrontations that earned the Kansas Territory its nickname, "Bleeding Kansas." After pro-slavery settlers attacked the antislavery town of Lawrence, Kansas, John Brown, a New England Abolitionist, revenged on the pro-slavery settlers by randomly killing pro-slavery families with his sons.

  • Dred Scott, a slave, sued for his freedom in Supreme Court. In 1857, the Supreme Court gave the decision that Dred Scott was not a citizen and didn't have the power to sue in Federal Court. The Supreme Court also declared the Missouri Compromise unconstitutional and ruled that slaves cannot become free even if they moved to free territory. The Decision was praised in the South and many Southerners were happy with the decision since their slaves now cannot just escape into free territory and become free.
  • On the night of October 16, 1859, John brown and 18 other men, including 5 of his sons, went into the federal arsenal at Harper's Ferry, Virginia in a plan to capture the arsenal and distribute weapons to nearby slaves to start a slave revolt. Brown's men went into the countryside to call for slaves to join the rebellion but very few showed up. Brown and his men were quickly trapped inside the arsenal surrounded by marines commanded by Robert E. Lee. Many of Brown's men died during the fight against the U.S. Marine and the rest of the men, including Brown, were captured and later hanged. After the incident, Brown was sanctified and heroized by Northern abolitionists and the incident encouraged abolitionists to fight harder.
  • With the election of Abraham Lincoln, the Southern States threatened to secede, mainly because of Lincoln's policy of keeping slavery as where it already exists. The Southern states were not happy with this policy because they want future states having a possibly of allowing slavery and want slavery to expand, not to just stay as it is. South Carolina seceded first followed by 10 other southern states, forming the Confederate States of America.
