  • Hey boys, I’ll give you bread if you teach me how to read. I’m a slave and I don’t know how to read much,

  • This led to Douglass asking poor white kids to teach him how to read. As a offer, he offered them bread he got from his mistress. This repeated and led to Douglass almost fully learning how to read.

  • This book, “The Columbian Orator” has really made me thought about the life of a slave.
  • The Columbian Orator was a book published in 1797, written by Caleb Bingham. This had been once of the greatest influence on Fredrick Douglass, changing his views on how slaves were being treated. He learned that slaves like him were being mistreated, which is what led him to be a writer, and making an influence against slavery.
