THALES OF MILETUS
ELECTRICITY MILESTONES
Thales found that if amber was rubbed with animal fur, it could attract light objects such as a feather or seeds. This is due to what we now know as static electricity.
BENJAMIN FRANKLIN
Benjamin Franklin discovered that lightning and electricity were the same using a kite, a key, and a leyden jar (an early capacitor).
LUIGI GALVANI
ALESSANDRO VOLTA
Galvani found that he could make frogs legs move when they were connected to different types of metals.
MICHAEL FARADAY
Alessandro Volta created the first battery. The voltaic pile produced a current and was made by stacking different metals separated by paper that had been soaked in a salt solution.
Faraday discovered electromagetic induction by passing a magnet through a coil of wire. The unit for capacitance, the Farad, is named after him.
FIRST TOWN WITH A PUBLIC ELECTRICITY SUPPLY
Godalming was the first town in the world to have a public electricity supply. A generator was connected to a waterwheel.
