  • Boxes resemble hidden things, and the shabby appearance resembles something wrong, corrupt and unfair. The box hides the hidden truth that lottery is bad.

  • Rocks resemble a person's or people's stubborn or bad nature. Rock never truly go away, just like the tradition of the lottery in the story.

  • Paper symbolizes that anything can change, it only depends on whether or not you decide to change it. Anything can be written on paper, it just depends on what you decide to write on it. The lottery is capable to change, as it has been removed in other cities, but people in this town don't want change.

  • The color black resembles dark pasts, fear, mystery, and unchangeable things. Everyone was a bit scared, and didn't want to get the black dot, and it almost seemed as if nobody could get rid of the lottery in that town, because it was a tradition
  • The reader expects that winning the lottery is a good thing, but it turns out to be a bad thing.
  • I think the theme of the story is to know what you're doing. When everyone in the town participates in the lottery they don't know that they are doing something bad; they should have been aware of that.
