- The scene begins with two men walking down a street in the city of Venice. There is Iago, an ensign of General Othello, and Roderigo, a wealthy man in love Othello’s now-wife, Desdemona. Iago has just informed Roderigo of Othello and Desdemona’s elopement.
- OTHELLO: ACT ONE, SCENE ONE
- I thought you hated the Moor?
- Really Iago! After all the money I have given you to help pursue Desdemona, you come with news of her elopement to Othello. I thought you were being a good friend and helping me.
- Do you honestly think I wanted this to happen? If you truly do, feel free to hate me.
- Iago explains to Roderigo why he hates Othello so much and reveals his true intentions.
- I do, with a passion! He overlooked me, a man with experience, for the position of lieutenant, and gave it to some guy named Micheal Cassio. He has war knowledge, but no fight in him, he just runs behind his lady. Ugh, what a curse my job has!
- Wow, that is rough. Why don't you quit?
- Don’t be hasty, I’m only working for him now to take advantage of him later. I need to pretend to be loyal to look out for myself and get what I want.
- The men hatch a plan to make trouble for Othello.....
- I know a way to make trouble. We need to wake up Brabantio, Desdemona’s father, and tell him about the marriage. That will ruin everything for the Moor!
- This is his house, I’ll shout for him.
- Shout my friend, shout like there is a fire!
- WHY ARE YOU SHOUTING? WHAT IS GOING ON? Roderigo, is that you?
- Signor Brabantio, WAKE UP!
- The two inform Brabantio of the marriage, but he doesn't believe them, thinking it was just Rodrigo lying to get Desdemona.
- Sir, you have been robbed of your daughter by a black Moor, Othello! Doing God knows what to her, bringing you black grandchildren! They have married!
- Are you crazy? I have told you many times not to come to my house, my daughter is not for you, you drunk!
- Sir, we are trying to tell you the truth, your daughter has married, if you know, sue us, but if not...
- Brabantio leaves to go find his daughter, and Iago cleverly leaves as well to cover up his tracks.
- Well, it looks like its time for me to leave, I cannot be seen making trouble for Othello. If you want to find me, I will be with him at the Sagittarius Inn, lead Brabantio there.
- Oh God, I need to go find her!
- Brabantio comes back after not finding Desdemona, this time with his servants, and they all follow Roderigo to find the newlyweds.
- She must have been charmed or bewitched! Oh God, how I wish I had said yes to you! Do you know where they are?
- She’s gone! Tell me, where did you see her? Was it with Othello you say? Do you really think they are married?
- I do sir, gather your men and follow me.
- Yes, I truly do.
