- Chapter 29: Jem has stabilized but is unconscious, and Heck Tate needs some details from Scout about what happened.
- Scout... tell us what happened...
- We were walking home from the pageant, and we heard someone following us. It was really dark, but Jem could see me because I was a ham.
- It was all crushed when she came home in it.
- That explains the puncture holes in Ewell's clothes and arms. This thing probably saved your life, Scout. There's a knife slice right down the seam.

- So then we were walking under the tree and someone grabbed me and smashed my costume. Jem grabbed me and pulled me toward the road, but then he got knocked down and there was a fight and Jem screamed...
- That must have been when Jem's arm broke!
- Jem got real quiet, and Mr. Ewell was squeezing me, but someone knocked me down... I guess Jem had gotten up and done it. Then I heard staggering around and a lot of coughing., and it didn't sound like Jem.
- Well, who was it?
- Why, there he is, Mr. Tate. He can tell you his name.
