The Massachusetts Bay Colony was founded in 1630 by John Winthrop and other Puritans. Its original name was Province of Massachusetts Bay and later became Massachusetts and Maine.

The Puritans believed strongly in good education. In 1636, they founded Harvard University in Boston, which was a major city in the Massachusetts Bay Colony.
The colonists made their living off of fishing, whaling, and shipbuilding. Although farming was difficult, they planted pumpkins and other crops.
