The Cask of Amontillado

- In the vaults of Montressor, Fortunato is intoxicated. Montressor leads Fortunato the back to sample a wine called Amontillado. The vault is cold, damp, and covered in Nitre.
- The irony of this slide is that Fortunato wants to continue walking, not knowing that he is going to his death. Montressor continues to give him an out, but he doesn't take it. Fortunato is too drunk to note the hole in the wall.

- Montressor continues to drink to fool Fortunato into trusting him. He is a con-artist, he manipulates Fortunato with his lies. There is no pipe of wine
- Montressor deicide's to get revenge on Fortunato because he has insulted him in the past. Fortunato does not realize. There is a conflict between the two. Montressor uses Fortunato's love of wine to get the best of him.
- Montressor chains Fortunato to the wall. He knows that Fortunato's heath and the amount of nitre of the wall will kill him soon. Fortunato can do nothing but scream but no one can hear him.
- At the end of the story, Montressor reveals that no one has disturbed Fortunato for 20 years. His body still walled behind the bricks an mortar. He ends the story with the old saying "Pace in Requescet" ( Rest in Peace).
