- Jackson: I'm sorry Mia, but I think we should break up.
- Mia: *in complete shock*
- We'll be going in depth about Defense Mechanisms!
-  He has the nerve to break up with me after 3 years together., are you kidding me!
- Jackson and Mia are on the way home from school when Jackson drops a bomb on Mia.
- I can't believe it's really over. Jackson doesn't love me anymore.
- This first stage, known as Displacement, is the shifting of aggressive impulses toward a more acceptable or less threatening object/person. As you can see Mia is taking out her anger and frustration from the previous situation by throwing a glass at the wall.
- Astride he actually broke up with me, like we weren't together for 3 years, and like I meant nothing to him.
- Clearly Mia is still trying to process the break up, by expressing her anger. 
- The next stage is Denial, when one refuses to believe or accept the painful reality. Here Mia is crying on her bed in disbelief that her and Jackson are no longer together.
- Lastly is Regression, which is retreating to a more infantile psychosexual stage, where some psychic energy remains fixated. Mia is currently ranting to her best friend Astride about how sad she is about the break up.
