- Pearl fishing was the major source ofincome. The history of pearl diving in the UAE have been happening more than 7000 years ago. The UAE was thriving off of the money made from the pearls. It is considered one of the UAE most treasure traditions. Divers were expected to tie a small stone to the bottom of there foot in order to sink to the bottom of the sea bed, and collect as many oysters as they could before their breath ran out. In many cases, they were even attacked by sharks. Pearl fishing provide a relatively good income.
- The discovery of oil in the UAE in 1958 changed the fortunes of the country for good. Oil was discover under an old pearling bed, Persian Gulf. Discovery of oil was the major trigger for the rapid economic growth of the UAE in the second half of the 20th century. The first cargo of crude was exported from Jabel Dhanna in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi in 1962.
