- Tom Walker and his wife are described as miserly and bitter towards each others. The couple even goes as far as hiding money from and cheating on each other.
- CLIMAX
- One day, Tom takes an shortcut home. Though, Tom Walker is approached by a man who turns out to be the devil. The devil tells Tom of Kidd's buried treasure, and offers to place it within Tom's reach "on certain conditions."
- FALLING ACTION
- Tom shares with his wife all that transpired in the swamp, and mentioned Kidd's hidden treasure. She urges Tom to accept the devils conditions for securing the treasure. Though, he doesn't. Tom's wife decides to make the deal herself, which ultimately led to her demise. After Tom finds his wife dead, he takes the deal with the devil and finds the treasure.
- RESOLUTION
- As Tom got older, he also became very wealthy but begins to worry about his soul. It is clear that he regrets his deal and tries to repent by reading the Bible and attending church, but he remains in his nefarious business. Then one day, while consulting with a land jobber, he hears three loud knocks at the door.
- The devil arrived to collect his due: Tom's soul. The black man whisks Tom up like a child astride a black horse, which gallops away with him in the midst of a thunderstorm.
- Trustees are appointed to administer to Tom's estate, but all his bonds and mortgages are found reduced to cinders, and all his gold and silver to chips and shavings. Such is the end of Tom Walker and his immorally acquired wealth.
