The old man's hour had come! With a loud yell, I threw open the lantern and leaped into the room. He shrieked once. In an instant, I dragged him to the floor and pulled the heavy bed over him. I smiled because the deed was done. I had finally gotten rid of the eye. I heard a muffled heart beating but I decided to ignore it. The man was dead. I dismembered the corpse and put it under the flooring of his chamber. There was no mess, as I had been too wary for one. As the bell sounded the hour, there was a knocking at the door.
It was three policemen who had come to investigate after a neighbor heard a shriek. I let the gentlemen inside the house to investigate. I had nothing to fear. I led them to his chamber and showed them how all of his belongings were undisturbed.
The old man is out of town! The shriek was my own, from a dream!
The officers were satisfied. My manner had convinced them. They sat, and while I answered cheerily, they chatted of familiar things. But, ere long, I felt myself getting pale and wished them gone. My head ached and I heard a familiar noise. It was the beating of the old man's heart. It grew louder and louder. I paced the floor and graded my chair on the boards. Still, the men kept chatting pleasantly and smiled. Was it possible they heard not? They knew! They were making a mockery of my horror!
"Villains! Dissemble no more! I admit the deed! Tear up the planks!-here, here!- It is the beating of his hideous heart!"
