- I need to tell you something but please be calm because of your heart trouble. There.. there's been an accident... a railroad disaster.. Brentley was there.. he has been killed
- free, free, free!!
- Louise, open the door! please, you will make yourself ill!
- Go away I will not make myself ill!
- I am home! Josephine, why do you look so shocked?
- She died of heart disease. I am very sorry for your loss.
- Mrs. Mallard has heart trouble and Richard has found out from the newspaper that his friend, Mrs. Mallard's husband has died in a railroad disaster. Her sister, Josephine, has chosen to tell her the sad news.
- After hearing the news about her husband, Louise runs upstairs and locks herself in her bedroom and wouldn't allow anybody to follow. She is whispering to herself "free, free, free!"
- Josephine is at Louise's door trying to get her to open it thinking she will make herself ill. Louise is just looking out the window drinking her elixir of life
- Louise finally opens the door and her and Josephine head downstairs and Richard was standing at the bottom waiting for them.
- Suddenly, the door opens. It is Brentley. He was far away from the scene of the accident and walks in and was amazed at Josephine's piercing cry.
- The doctors come and say that Josephine had died of heart disease-- of the joy that kills.
