  • Bo has been stuck on the same deadlift weight for quite some time now, and he is determined to set a new personal record for himself today.
  • In doing this action, Bo stimulates the Golgi tendon organs. The Golgi tendon organ is a tree-like sensory ending enclosed in a spindle-like connective tissue capsule, that lies near the end of a tendon with a muscle.
  • Unfortunately for Bo, he won't reach a new personal best today. His Golgi tendon reflex kicks in, and Bo drops the weight instantly.
  • Bo is quite disappointed, and when he goes home, he mentions his experience at the gym. His older brother, who is studying to be a physiotherapist, decides to make this a learning experience.
  • I was going for my new best, and I just dropped the weight. I didn't mean to, it was like my muscles just couldn't take it anymore
  • Well, that is actually called your Golgi tendon reflex, and can happen to anyone.
  • Bo's brother tells him "The Golgi tendon organ is your receptor in this situation. When there is too much tension in the receptor, (from attempting the deadlift) the sensory neurons manage the action potential and synapse with the interneurons of the spinal cord. Long story short, if you're lifting too much weight, your body will save you an injury by relaxing your muscles, causing you to drop the weight. Had this not happened at the gym today, you very well could have been injured."
  • Well, the motor neurons are located within the ventral horn of the spinal cord, where the inhibition occurs. This is what causes you to drop the weight without meaning to. In the end of all of this, your skeletal muscle can finally relax.
  • I think I heard about this in school. There's also something about a motor neuron I think?
