  • Causes
  • Living Conditions
  • The Great Depression was an economic recession that lasted from 1929-1939, and with it being the U.S's largest financial loss in its history, it still carries an effect on today's economy.
  • Major Political Events
  • Some triggers of the Depression include declines in monetary supply, decreased spending, abnormally low-valued prices and stocks, rushes to withdraw money, and overloading the buying and selling of stocks. This led to the national stock market crash, known by many as Black Tuesday (1929).
  • Effects Impact
  • Living conditions during the Great Depression were terrible, with many unemployed, hungry, impoverished, and unhappy. The economic crash caused businesses to cut costs, leading to many being laid-off of work. This lack of pay only furthered the rise in hunger, poverty, and dissatisfaction felt by citizens nationwide.
  • Conclusion
  • There were many governmental changes enforced in response to the Depression. One law passed by Franklin Roosevelt was called the New Deal (1933-1939). This movement led to the reconstruction of U.S economy sectors and jobs for the unemployed. This also led to services such as Social Security and welfare benefits, meant to compensate for major losses.
  • The Great Depression very much influenced the arts, warfare, economics, and more. The Depression led to the creation of distractions from such tragedy, with songs such as Brother, Can You Spare Me a Dime? becoming very popular. The New Deal has a big impact on welfare assistance in the U.S such as 401(K) and Social Security. And also, U.S involvement in WW2 led to the 'end' of the Great Depression.
  • Overall, the Great Depression has wreaked havoc on all aspects of nationwide and worldwide life. The mix of poor living conditions, great political assistance, war readiness, economic mayhem, and innovation in culture has created a mark in today's stone of life.
