  • The Story of the Endosymbiotic Theory
  • Let's start our journey by going back in time and taking a look at the prokaryotic cells back when Earth was still fairly new. The astronaut it trying to prove the Endosymbiotic Theory as true, which is the theory that organelles such as the mitochondria and chloroplast were actually prokaryotic cells early on and simply evolved to become as they are.
  •
  • Oh look! There are two prokaryotic cells here. One is a photosynthetic cell named Chloro and the other is capable of cellular respiration and named Mito.
  • Mito
  • Chloro
  • Oh no! Mito was engulfed by a bigger prokaryotic cell... wait, they are actually working really well together! The start of an early eukaryotic cell ancestor.
  • Who would've known? They're already inseparable.
  • Mito
  • Now it's Chloro's turn to join Mito and become engulfed in the cell. It seems all the cells are adjusting and changing after joining together, since they don't need to do everything by themselves.
  • They are starting to become a little too comfortable. If it keeps going like this, they really will be inseparable, because they'll be used to being together.
  • Mito
  • Chloro
  • **Many many years later**... It seems the astronaut was right! Mito and Chloro changed after becoming engulfed in the big prokaryotic cell. They evolved over time to meet their needs and became Mitochondria and Chloroplast.
  • But no one will believe me about time traveling to the past! How do I prove to everyone that the Endosymbiotic Theory is true?
  • Actually, I might know! If mitochondria and chloroplasts evolved from prokaryotic cells, then they must have similarities to them as well! I just need to find them.
