  • Good Morning! We all are aware that after a long period of wait yesterday, ‘A Doll’s House’ by the renowned Playwright Henrik Ibsen was performed at Palome de Theatre. The play has indeed created enough buzz and not to forget controversies to shake our quiet and peaceful neighborhoods. Today, our radio station is proud to host three listeners who come from different age-groups. Social thoughts and perspectives and also represent two important sections (Genders) in an institution called marriage.
  • Torvald: It has really been such a storm destroying the conservative stereotypical mindset of the society. It is such a relief to be looking at life from your perspective. O, Nora! I wish I could convince you to come back and see how this Christmas, not just a new Nora but also a new Torvald has been born.
  • Nora: Thank you to Torvald! … and Krogstad too! If it hadn’t been for the two of them and especially the ‘Letter from Krogstad’ I would still be looking up to ‘My Hero – Torvald’. And how foolish of me! I was waiting to grow old (tired, ugly women whose company Torvald would despise and I would hide in some corner of the house.) How foolish does it seem now, that I even contemplated committing suicide by jumping into the river?
  • considering the time has changed and various movements have led to the development of mindsets, Now, how, in your opinion, can Torvalds’s actions be justified?
  • In my opinion, being a liberal-minded woman of the times, I believe Nora had the power to protest against Torvald’s misogynistic commands. Even if she has become a part of the institution of marriage. However, she resorts to deceitful actions which cause her moral downfall and she is compelled her to leave her children and home.
  • Yes, it surely does! At the same time, Torvald’spersonality remained assertive since the beginning of the marriage? This primarily is because of the social conventions and his upbringing. We, males, are made to grow in the archaic ‘Machoistic’ image. We are not groomed to respect gender differences. Simultaneously, we are not permitted to behave in natural ways.
  • However, don't you think a personal experience of this sort is what shapes a person and makes them question themselves?
  • Wshh!! I’d disagree…. Torvald was a strong male entitled to his opinions and Nora being Torvald’s partner is supposed to behave in the manner as per the culture and conventions of our times. She is expected to honor her social responsibilities and conventions which command her to follow her husband and be a devoted, submissive wife. There is no question of her being called a doll. Anyway, dolls are cute and delicate so Nora should have been happy that she was given due care and patronage.
