In this scene, Tim and Kiowa are up late during the night. Tim at the time has a girl named Billy and he calls Kiowa over to come look at the picture he has of her. Kiowa turns on a flashlight and says "Hey, she's cute," moments before disaster strikes
The field around Tim and Kiowa explodes with mortar rounds hitting the ground and area around them. Kiowa drops the flashlight and Tim loses the picture of Billy, his girlfriend at the time.
Tim remembers crawling towards Kiowa's scream with no sense of direction and the field being all wet and black. Kiowa screams because he got shot and Tim tries to make his way towards him to save him.
Tim finds Kiowa almost fully submerged in the Song Tra Bong. The rain and the loud noises from the mortar rounds being fired, Tim hurries and grabs Kiowa's boot and try to pull him out.
In this scene, Tim is shown struggling to pull out Kiowa from the water. The stench of the Song Tra Bong was so strong he ended up letting go of Kiowa's boot. Kiowa starts to fully submerged under the water and ends up drowing.
We're shown that Tim feels the most guilty of all the soldiers because he let something get in the way of his fellow soldier, Kiowa, and himself. Tim O'Brien is shown to be impacted the most by Kiowa's death aswell.
