  • Classical Conditioning with Changing AppearanceBy Sierra Cuvelier
  • During middle school, I did not care what my hair looked like when I had plans to go out. I would always ask my parents beforehand if I had permission to leave the house when I had plans. In this phase. the unconditioned stimulus is when I ask my parents if I can take part in plans I have made. The unconditioned response is my parents knowing that I will be going out. Before leaving, I straighten my hair. The neutral stimulus is that I am going to straighten my hair and they do not show a response.
  • Can I go out for supper with friends?
  • Then I straighten my hair before leaving...
  • ...?
  • Throughout phase two, I straightened my hair every time before activities with my friends. The unconditioned response from my parents is knowing that I am leaving the house because I tell them I am. Because I continue to straighten my hair consistently before leaving, they begin to associate my change in appearance to leaving the house.
  • Mom. Dad. I'm going to my friend's house.
  • Finally, phase three demonstrates the conditioned stimulus is my hair being straight to which my parents conditioned response is that I must be leaving the house and have plans.
  • Oh, your hair is straightened, you must have plans! Have fun and be safe! I Love you!
  • Bye Mom, I love you too!
