Marie Curie was born on November 7 , 1867. Her father wanted her to be as well educated as his sons.
In 1894, Marie Curie met Pierre Curie, a professor in the School of Physics. The following year, they were married.
Inspired by Henri Becquerel’s discovery of radioactivity in 1896, Curie isolated the elements polonium and radium.
In the start of Marie Curie's career and research, conditions were difficult and laboratory arrangements were lacking. The Curies had to struggle to make a living.
Nothing in life is to be feared, it is only to be understood. Now is the time to understand more, so that we may fear less.
In 1897, Marie Curie gave birth to her first daughter. However, this did not interrupt her research in science.
She was made the head of the International Red Cross’ radiological service.Throughout her life, Curie and her daughter, Irene, used radium to help reduce suffering during World War I.
During her lifetime, Marie Curie received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1903 and the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1911. Marie Curie was the first woman to receive a Nobel Prize, and in two different fields.
