- HIV is typically tested through gathering sample cells through a cheek swab to identify the presence of antibodies to the virus. HIV tests vary in how soon they are able to detect infection.
- Can you help explain to my Patient Bob who has contracted HIV how everything works?

- From the time Bob contracted HIV to when his antibodies are able to be detected is known as the window period. It could take your body 3-12 weeks to produce enough antibodies for a test to detect the HIV infection. After a positive initial result a follow up testing is necessary to establish and HIV diagnosis.
- After diagnosis, Bob will likely not die as HIV left untreated can lead to acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). While death rates from AIDS have declined globally, the condition decreases your bodies ability to fight off infections—which can lead to death. Unfortunately there is no cure for HIV, even with treatment as HIV is a chronic condition that requires lifelong disease management.

HIV can transmitted through sexual intercourse with someone who has HIV, sharing injection or drug equipment, such as needles, with someone who has HIV, from mother to child during pregnancy, birth, or breastfeeding, Getting stuck with an HIV-contaminated needle or other sharp object.
