- Stage 1: Trust vs Mistrust (Birth to 1 year)The stage where infants depend on others for care. Dependable Caregiving can lead to a sense of trust for the infant where infants who are not well cared for develop mistrust.
- It is important for infants to receive consistent care during this period. Ex: One of the most important events would be feeding.

- Stage 2: Autonomy vs Shame ( 1 to 3 years)During this stage children begin to discover their own independence. If a child is given an opportunity to be independent it will lead to a sense of autonomy. If a child is overly punished it can lead to feelings of shame.
- During this stage it is important for children to accomplish goals and develop purpose. The most important event during this stage is exploration.
- Children often test their independence by attempting to assume moreresponsibility which can lead to autonomy. One of the most important events during this stage is toilet training.

- Stage 3: Initiative vs Guilt ( 3 to 5 years)During this stage children are usually in pre-school. They learn to plan out their goals. Succeedingin these goals can lead to sense of accomplishment and initiative. If the child is made to be irresponsible , feelings of guilt and anxiety can take place.
