  • Siddartha reaches a river and wishes to die.
  • He hears Om again
  • Om
  • He falls asleep
  • Om,om,om...
  • "There was nothing more for him but to efface himself, to destroy the unsuccessful structure of his life, throw it away, macked at by the gods" (88). This is Siddartha's abyss. He realizes that the last twenty years of his life have been counter-productive and believes that the best thing that he can do now is die.
  • Siddartha meets Govinda
  • "'It gives me great pleasure to see you again'" (92)
  • "He bent, with closed eyes- towards death. Then from a remote part of his soul, he heard a sound. It was one word, one syllable, which without thinking, he spoke indistinctly, the ancient beginning and ending of all Brahmin prayers, the holy Om" (89). Right before Siddartha was about to kill himself, he hears the Om, and his soul awakened as he realized what he was just about to do.
  • He thinks again
  • "His sleep was deep and dreamless; he had not slept like this for a long time. When he awakened after many hours, it seemed as if ten years had passed" (90). This sleep was very important as Siddartha woke up to a new self; a different man than who he was when he went to sleep.
  • Siddartha transformes
  • "Smiling, Siddartha watched him go. He still loved him, this faithful, anxious friend. And at that moment, in that splendid hour, after his wonderous sleep, permeated with Om, how could he help but love someone" (94). Seeing his old friend, Siddartha was reminded of his youth, which reminded him of his quest for his Self. The departure of his friend also left him alone to think.
  • "I had to become a fool again in order to find Atman in myself. I had to sin in order to live again, Whither will my path lead me? This path is stupid, it goes in spirals, perhaps in circles, but whichever way it goes, I will follow it" (97). Siddartha thinks about his life and his path, and realizes that it was only when he regressed in his capabilities that he could improve.
  • "The bird, the clear spring and voice within him was still alive-that was why he rejoiced, that was why he laughed, that was why his face was radiant under his grey hair. It is a good thing to experience oneself, he thought" (98) Siddartha finally accomplished his goals and reached the transformation in which his old self died and was reborn.
