- Silvey and Judy Brown start at Beresford street school after transferring from Wellesly Street school. At least her best friend Judy and her favourite teacher are there! Silvey's class has to write a family history project.
- Silvey meets some soldiers called Tom, Wayne, and Harry. They are american-chinese soldiers that came to New Zealand. They are very kind and caring, and are nice to everyone. They are good soliders.
- A rude boy named Sunny comes into SIlvey Chan's grocery store. He buys some preserved plums. Silvey thinks that SUnny has a crush on her, but Silvey doesn't like Sunny.
- Tom, Wayne, and Harry take Silvey, her Siblings, and Silvey to their camp. Silvey is amazed that that is where they live. Harry, Wayne, and Tom give them all American Candy and Soda.
- Wayne, Tom, and Harry have to go to war. Silvey knew that this day would come, but she is still devastated. She will miss the soliders, especially Tom. The soldiers are also scared and don't know if they'll come back alive.
- Sunny and his father move back to wanganui.
