  • The Great Chicago Fire happened in 1871 and kill 300, and left almost 100,000 homeless. The affected area was 4 miles long and 1 mile wide. It happened because the winds that night were at extremely high speeds along with there being no rain for 3 weeks and hot temperatures. Many buildings burn also because they were made of wood. The fire was started in O'Learey's barn, supposedly by a cow knocking it over.It is considered a disaster because every building was destroyed.
  • The whole mess happened on March 11, 2011, whenever a magnitude 9.0 earthquake hit off the coast of Japan. The earthquake caused a gigantic tsunami to hit the coast, resulting in 15000 deaths, and almost a million buildings being destroyed. However, a nuclear meltdown happened from the tsunami, causing radiation to travel as far as 37 miles. It's considered a disaster because of the death and loss of buildings and the radiation leak.
  • On March 18, 1925, the sky around Ellington, Missouri, darkened into a storm system. A cold wind from the southwest mixed with moist air, creating a gigantic F5 tornado. It traveled for 40 minutes, crossing Missouri and cutting through Illinois, killing 600 and injuring 1,500. It traveled 219 miles and destroyed 15,000 homes It is considered a disaster because of the loss of buildings, and the unpredictability of this happening.
