  • Upon the end of the war in 1919, American soldiers flooded back home, and at the same time, the country demobilized from the war. Unemployment soared, and currency value plummeted. Businesses turned against many of the work changes, and strikes became extremely common. Businesses went to war against unions, and broke strikes, stirring up Red Fear. These union losses would set a trend of nearly 20 years of workers ill fortunes.
  • In April of 1917, Congress voted to enter World War I. The US sent troops to France, including more than 25,000 women who served as nurses, drivers and telephone operators among many other roles. At home, many men being sent to the frontlines left vital jobs open, which began to be filled by women, like welders, metalworkers and heavy machine operators. The number of women working soared, as did their desire for rights. The National American Woman Suffrage Association, led by Carrie Chapman Catt led the charge for suffrage, and in 1919 congress passed the 19th amendment, granting women the right to vote.
  • Muckraking was coined by Theodore Roosevelt and adopted by journalists who wrote to expose the corruption of big business and government. Muckraking helped pass progressive policies through congress, such as the Pure Food and Drug act as well as the Meat Inspection act. The book The Jungle , written by Upton Sinclair in 1906, exposed the horrible conditions of meatpacking plants, leading to the passing of these two acts.
