  • Phaethon
  • Once, long ago, two boys were racing along the edge of a cliff that hung over a deep blue sea. They were the same size; one boy had black hair (Epaphus, Son of Zeus), the other had yellow hair (Phaethon, Son of Apollo). The yellow-haired one managed to win the race by a hair's breadth. The black-haired one was angry.
  • Oh, really? Well, MY father is Apollo! He is the God of the Sun. Without my father there would be no day and human beings wouldn't be able to survive.
  • You think you're pretty good. but you're not so much. My father is Zeus! he is the king of gods and god of lightning.
  • Phaethon hadn't really met his father, nor had he seen the Eastern Palace. But he didn't dare tell this to Epaphus. Hence, he lied. Phaethon set off towards the East in search of the Eastern Palace. After many, many hours of walking, he collapsed, only to be picked up by Apollo's sun hawks and brought before him.
  • Grrrr! I AM the son of a god. And I visit my father in his eastern palace often. He told me that the next time I visited him he would let me drive his sun chariot. The giant wheel of the chariot is the Sun we see. I shall go right now and ask him to let me drive it. To let you know its me driving it, I will drive the chariot around your house in circles. Farewell, Son of Zeus!!!
  • Sometimes I visit my father. I sit on Olympus with him and he teaches me many things. he also gives me presents like thunderbolts. Do YOU visit your father often? Ha!! I don't think you have ever visited your father.
  • Father, promise me that you will allow me to drive your sun chariot. I had told a friend that I would do so, to prove that I am your son. I MUST PROVE MYSELF!!
  • Although Apollo was furious with Phaethon, he had to keep his promise, so he led him to the stables and placed Phaethon on the chariot. He warned him to keep the middle way. Too high, and the Earth would freeze, too low and it would burn. Acknowledging his father's words, Phaethon took off. Everything was going fine, until...
  • Wh-wh-what!! B-b-but even the immortal gods cannot drive my chariot. How can you, a mortal drive it? Alas, the oracle had predicted the destruction of the Earth. A promise is a promise, and I must be true to my word. Follow me, foolish boy!
  • Phaethon dove down towards his village to show Epaphus that it was him riding the chariot. However, it caught fire as the Sun was too close. Trying to prevent his village from burning, Phaethon drove the chariot upwards, but lost control. The Earth froze. Seeing all this destruction, Zeus looked down from Olympus, and noticing the charioteer was not Apollo, he hurled his thunderbolt at Phaethon. Phaethon was killed instantly.
  • HELPPP!!!
  • Horses, go down; I need to show Epaphus that it is indeed me driving the chariot, and not Apollo. Down! Down! Wh-what! The village is on fire. Horses, go up! Up! Up!
  • The horses flew back towards the Eastern Palace. Phaethon's yellow-haired sisters, The Heliades, wept for him. They cried so much that Apollo had to change them into poplar trees. Since then, only Apollo is allowed to drive the sun chariot!
