- After deciding to replace the Articles of Confederation, two major plans were proposed, one being the Virginia Plan and the other being the New Jersey Plan.
- Yeah and in the New Jersey Plan, to summarize, proposed a unicameral legislature with equal representation and keep the power for the states and not so much for the government.
- The Virginia Plan was a work offered by James Madison and presented by Edmund Randolph where it discusses a government with three separate branches , the legislative, executive, and judicial.
- Mm so what happened? Which one did they pick?
- There were many debates about representation in Congress but they had to come into an agreement at some point, that is where the Connecticut Compromise comes in.
- Yeah basically and the whole idea about having a strong central government remained.
- So what, they just combined both of their plans?
- huh? There was also another compromise mentioned in the book…but I don’t remember it and there’s NO WAY I’m going back inside.
- Yeah crazy stuff, by September 13, 1788, 11 of the 13 states had approved the constitution and on April 30 of that year, the United States of America had its first president.
- If I’m not mistaken, it was Delaware, but luckily they only needed the approval of nine states to have the constitution ratified and put into effect.
- Wow.
