- Due to the painful experience of the Great Depression and the tragic losses of WWI the U.S. tried to become less involved in world affairs after WWI ended. This included not joining the League of Nations. as well as excluding Chinese, Japanese, and other Asians. But later the U.S. decided to exclude even Europeans, mostly eastern and southern Europeans.
