  • Bleeding Kansas occurred after the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854. It repealed the Missouri Compromise, created new territories, and allowed for popular sovereignty. Its initial purpose was to open up thousands of new farms but also allow states to choose whether slavery was legal or not.
  • KEEP KANSAS FREE!
  • Kansas was split between a slave state and a free state. People from the South who supported slaves wanted Kansas to become a slave state. Others from the South who didn't support slaves wanted Kansas to be a free state.
  • NORTH
  • WE WANT SLAVES!
  • SOUTH

  • After the Act was passed, Southerners crossed the border of Missouri. Armed settlers also came from the North. Men flooded over the boundary of Missouri and out-voted the anti-slavery settlers in Kansas, then went home.
  • John Brown led anti-slavery fighters in an attack on Harpers Ferry. This civil conflict led to more political polarization. This was expected because the frontier area was compounded of pro-slavery Missourians and those in the North that wanted slaves free.
  • In late 1855, thousands of Missourians attacked the free-state stronghold and in 1856 the entire town was looted. In response, John Brown led the attack and murder of five pro-slavery activists (not pictured). After that, there was still four months of violence.
  • Bleeding Kansas- The Pottawatomie Massacre triggered dozens of incidents throughout Kansas. Some 200 people were killed. And this became a violent battlefield in the civil war.
