  • In wandering for an easier path to take, Christian and Hopeful have gotten off of the narrow path. Once they realize this, they turn around to find their way back, but the sky darkens and it begins to storm. Christian, feeling very guilty for leading Hopeful off the path, offers to walk into the danger first, but Hopeful allows nothing of the sort.
  • "No, you shall not go first for your troubled mind may once more lead you out of the way
  • If you please, let me go first, that if there be danger, I may be the first there-in. It is my fault we are out of the way.
  • During their journey back to the path, Christian and Hopeful became very exhausted . They decided to take a rest in a seemingly safe meadow nearby. Unbeknownst to the pilgrims, this land is owned by a cruel giant named Great Despair. In the morning, the giant awakens to the pilgrims on his land and is enraged.
  • Who goes there? You must go with me for you have trespassed my land!
  • We are pilgrims who have lost their way. We sought rest here for one night.
  • I agree, our current situation is terrible, but that doesn't mean we should give up on living. God says to commit no murder and by killing ourselves we'd go against that
  • After they were taken away by Great Despair, the pilgrims were placed in a dingy dungeon. Christian and Hopeful were beaten and ridiculed harshly by the giant. This treatment was so bad that Christian considered committing suicide. Thankfully, Hopeful was able to convince him otherwise.
  • The life we now live is miserable. What's the point of even being alive. Maybe we should take the giant's advice.
