स्टोरीबोर्ड पाठ

  • My name is fannie lou hamer and i was born October 6, 1917 in Montgomery, Mississippi. I was the youngest amongst 20 children and started field work when I was just 6 years old.
  • When I turned 12 I stop going to school to work. In 1944, I married perry hamer and lived on B.D Marlowe plantation until 1962.
  • In 1961, Hamer received a hysterectomy by a white doctor without her consent while undergoing surgery to remove a tumor.
  • A hysterectomy is an operation to remove the female uterus. This was done to reduce population in African Americans
  • That summer of 1961, I attended a meeting led by civil rights activist James Forman of the Students Non-violent Coordinating Committee.
  • We were denied the right to vote due to an unfair literacy test and we were harassed on our way home by the police.
  • By 1962 I was a SNCC organizer and on August 31, 1962, I led 17 volunteers to register to vote at the Indianola, Mississippi Courthouse
  • I turned to economics after traveling and giving powerful speeches on behalf of civil rights. In 1968 I began a "pig bank" to provide free pigs for black farmers to breed, raise and slaughter.
  • Extensive travel and fundraising took Hamer away from the day-to-day operations, as did her failing health. Not long after she died from breast cancer at the young age of 59.
  • A year later I created the FFC(Freedom Farm Cooperative), buying up land that blacks could own and farm collectively.
