  • ROUGH DRAFT
  • To be fit and healthy, you have to be in a recreational program. To feel satisfied and be able to enjoy your fitness plan, chose activities you like doing and that benefit your health.Everyone has a different plan that fits them. People have their own different personal needs.
  • Selecting Physical Activities
  • Answer these questions so you can find a plan you are happy with:1. Which components of physical fitness do you need/want to improve?2. What types of activities do you enjoy?3. Why do these types of activities help you manage stress?4. What sport skills do you have?5. Would you like to participate with others in these activities or on your own?6. Where are your chosen activities offered?7. Will you need special equipment or facilities to participate in your chosen activity?
  • Try to chose a physical activity that you both enjoy and fits in with these factors!
  • Certain physical and mental factors can affect your choice of activities:Health Conditions - Physical conditions and disabilities.Personality and Attitude - Working in teams or alone, taught by a coach or by yourself, exercising casualty or competitively.Reason for Participation - What is the reason you are working out? To have fun? To manage stress?Environmental Considerations - Temperature, weather, humidity, traffic, air pollution.Other Considerations - Does your activity cost money or need a facility to work?
  • Considerations in Activity Choice
  • Weather Considerations
  • Weather is a factor that can affect your fitness plan and safety when working out. Both hot and cold weather can impact your health. Hot weather can lead to muscles cramps but also: Heat Exhaustion - Lightheadedness, sweating, headaches, difficulty breathing, rapid heart rate.Heat Cramps - Rapid heart rate, clammy skin, thirst, nausea.Heatstroke - Hot skin, unconsciousness, vision issues, hearing issues, difficulty balancing. For Heat Exhaustion/Cramps, move to a cooler environment, drink water, and take off extra clothing. If you are experiencing Heatstroke, call 911, move to a cool area, remove clothing, and take a cold shower/apply rubbing alcohol, until medical assistance comes.
  • Exercising in cold weather can lead to: Hypothermia: Low body temperatureFrostbite: Freezing limbs Always make sure to wear warm clothes when exercising in cold weather! If you have one of these conditions, move indoors and call a ambulance.
  • Physical Activity and Caloric Balance
  • Metabolism is how your body converts calories to energy, everyone's metabolism speed is different.
  • Caloric balance is the ratio of how many calories you burn vs. how many calories you consume in a day and is important for your physical health. Calories are either burned by your body using them for daily functions or doing physical exercise. Cardio exercise is one way to burn calories, but daily activities and chores can also burn some calories as well!
  • To maintain your body weight, you have to burn as many calories as you eat. Consuming more calories than you can burn will make you gain weight. If you burn more calories than you consume, you will lose weight. Try to not cut down your calories too much, your body needs calories to function, without enough energy, you can experience tiredness, loss of muscle, and nutritional deficiencies.
  • If you want to stay physically healthy, make sure you select activities you enjoy and will stick to and maintain your caloric balance. Be sure to stay safe and cautious when out in extremely hot or cold weather!
