  • Who is John Brown?
  • What happened in John Brown's Raid?
  • By: Tiffany Nieto, Trinity Salmon, Lana Suvar and Ifeoluwa Oyaniyi
  • Where and when did John Brown's Raid occur?
  • "I, John Brown, am now quite certain that the crimes of this guilty land will never be purged away but with blood. I had, as I now think, vainly flattered myself that without very much bloodshed it might be done."
  • John Brown was an abolitionist that was devoted to try and end slavery. He was willing to fight and die (later on hanged and declared guilty) to allow slaves the chance to be free and to be treated as equal. This was apparent in the events that happen before and after the Raid he organized on Harpers Ferry in Virginia (1859).
  • How did John Brown's Act of Courage became Influential?
  • We should keep slavery! We have the right to conserve it!
  • We should abolish slavery and no longer expand it to other American territories!
  • In October 16, 1859 Brown and his man advance towards Harpers Ferry. They took both bridges: the US Armory and Arsenal and the US Rifle Works. After several hours of fighting in the town, people in the marines, John Brown, and the survivors of the raid were taken captive and sent to jail in October 19 of 1859. As a result, he and those who were jailed along with him were trialed and sent to be hanged on November 2. Even though 5 of them escaped, John Brown was executed on December 2, 1859.
  • How does John Brown's Raid connect to Mexican American war?
  • We should stop spreading slavery in all parts of US including the new area gained in the country!
  • On October 16, 1859 John Brown arrived to Harper Ferry (where the whole conflict began). Then, on October 19 1859 John Brown was captured and put in jail. Later on October 27 (5 days after the raid), John Brown was found guilty. Due to this decision, on December 2nd of 1859 (the day of his death), he was hanged.
  • Even though many can say that John Brown's mission to abolish slavery was not successful, it did influenced future historical events like the Civil War. John Brown's persistence made other abolitionists and African Americans to gain power, stand up for themselves and fight against slavery. Inspired by his actions, the Union (North) and the Confederacy (South) came to a final confrontation in order to determine the status of slavery and whether the new territories gained in the Mexican American war and Louisiana Purchase would hold on to slavery or not.
  • Events like Mexican American War influenced the John Brown's Raid. The Mexican American war was a way for United States to gain more territory and by doing this many disputes emerged about whether it was going to contain slavery or not. People like Charles Summer even said that this war was just a strategy for the American nation to expand slavery. Knowing this, John Brown was determined to stop the continuance of slavery in the new territory and decided to create the raid.
