  • "If you're not going to include other black actors, I'm not going to be in your movie!"
  • Belafonte used his platform as a successful entertainer to take down the color barrier that was preventing a lot of black actors from being in movies and TV shows.
  • "Day-o! Day,me say day, me say day, me say day"
  • Belafonte wrote some of his music to spread word and help listeners understand some of the issues of discrimination Black people experienced.
  • "Day-o" written in 1956 describes the very hard working conditions of dockworkers loading bananas onto ships in the Caribbean. It shows that after working so hard all night they just wanted to finally go home.
  • "Daylight come and me wan' go home"
  • After Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated, Belafonte participated in the civil rights March On Washington in King's honor. He also gave a speech about the importance of the work of artists.
  • "Artists have a valuable function in any society since it is the artist who reveals the society to itself."
  • Belafonte continued to be an entertainer but he also worked the rest of his life for civil rights including working with President Obama and Senator Bernie Sanders. He lived to be 96.
