  • The temperance movement was one of the many movements that went into place during the Social Reform Movement. But, one difference between this movement and others are this movement only partially worked.

  • I'm Lyman Beecher and I started the Temperance Movement.
  • The goal of the temperance movement was to ban alcohol completely. But as read in the previous cell, this movement only partially worked. Alcohol was never completely banned, but there was a tax placed on it. At the beginning some states did outlaw alcohol, but later on it was repealed and replaced with a tax.
  • The temperance movement should reach the far ends of America to help fix society.

  • Many Americans blamed alcohol abuse for lots of America's problems including domestic violence. Since this movement occurred before women got rights, if a women's husband was abusive then she had very few choices on what to do. It was said that even the most holy of men could turn into the devil with alcohol abuse.

  • A man named Lyman Beecher was a Connecticut minister who is said to first start the temperance movement. He said he wanted to protect society from "rum-selling, tipping folk, infidels, and ruffscuff."
  • Many supporters of the temperance movement were also apart of the women's rights movement. For example, Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton were a part of the temperance movement.
  • They used pamphlets and lectures, and rallies that were organized based on revivals to make their causes known.
