- Charlie Gordon, age 37 receives a surgery meant to artificially raise his IQ as he was born with a mental disability.

- Charlie is abandoned at a bar by his coworkers, who used him for entertainment while he was drunk. At the time he does not understand that he was being manipulated.

- As the surgery's effects begin to show, Charlie is fired from his job as his coworkers are scared by his seemingly sudden gain in intelligence. He begins to realize that his coworkers were not actually his friends.
- resolution
- Algernon, the mouse used as the other subject in Charlie's surgery begins to regress in intelligence. Soon Algernon passes away, and Charlie realizes that his own intelligence may start to regress.
- Charlie begins his own research, trying to prevent the regression of his intelligence. He makes journal entries to track his experience. As his intelligence starts to decrease, he stops coming out of his room and feels very sick.
- Charlie decides to move away from New York. After completing his research he concluded there was no way to stop his intelligence regressing, and after fully regressing he decides he wants a new start.
