  • Paul and I are engaged, but we've decided to wait to get married because I need to keep my job.
  • She's married!? I have to tell our boss!
  • Rising Action
  • I heard you talking to Bernice! I need to tell our boss because you're married and your job should go to someone unemployed. 
  • What are you talking about? Paul and I are only engaged. I need my job!
  • ... ?
  • Dot and Paul had been dating for a year, and even though he couldn't afford a ring, he still proposed. Due to the Great Depression the country was suffering, they both decided to wait to get married. They kept it a secret from their employers but did tell their immediate family.
  • Climax
  • Good to see you John.It's important you know that Dot and I are not married. She helps to support her family and needs her job.
  • About a year later, Dorothy decided to finally tell her best friend, Bernie. She told her to keep it a secret because the common practice at the time would force Dorothy to give up her job to either a single woman or an unemployed male. Bernice promised not to tell.
  • Falling action
  • One year later...
  • Nellie, I talked to Paul and you misunderstood Dorothy. They are not married yet and stop spreading rumors. If you tell the boss and she gets fired.... we will need to break up.
  • I'm so sorry John, I didn't mean to cause a problem, I will apologized to Dot. Please, forgive me.
  • Dot's co-worker Nellie confronts her after work telling her she will report her to the boss because she overheard her say that she's married and that's not allowed. Dot is upset because she's afraid she will lose her job and she isn't even married to Paul yet.
  • Resolution
  • Two years later...
  • Dorothy tells Paul about what happened. He tells her not to worry, and that he'll talk to Nellie's boyfriend, John. Paul explains their situation and John promises that he will speak to Nellie.
  • I'm so sorry, I'm sure Nellie misunderstood what Dot said, I will speak to her and clear things up.
  • John tells Nellie that Dorothy and Paul both need their own jobs to support their parents and siblings and they can't afford to get married yet and she needs to mind her own business or their relationship is over.
  • After waiting almost 4 years Paul and Dot finally saved enough money to get married. The Great Depression was winding down and they knew there might still be challenging times ahead but at least they were together.
